I just wanted to take a moment to talk about Free and Open Source Software and the ethos that goes along with it. I believe open source software makes the world wide web go round. So many projects run critical infrastructure using open source technology. Linux is one of the most important pieces of software for both personal computing and enterprise and I love GNU/Linux. LibreOffice is a stellar suite. FileZilla is also really cool.
Everyone should use well vetted open source/FOSS software and switch over from lame proprietary. Moreover do your research and see if the particular software even needs to be closed source.
Plenty of people have contributed first-class pieces of software and hardware(RISC-V is so cool). I can't say for sure what motivates other open source software devs to make the stuff they do, however most motivations are probably rather humanistic compared to many closed source softwares' raison d'ĂȘtre.
I'm in awe of all those legendary people that make the software we love. Even if you're not running a server something on the internet is running some piece of open source software that makes cool tech possible.
I'm not saying there isn't any useful closed source software rather I'm saying that open source can be audited by anyone and is usally made by nicer nerds than the nerds making proprietary.
